As one of the most effective oxidants, ozone has many applications in pulp and paper processing, from bleaching to wastewater treatment. With a lower carbon footprint, and its ability to bleach without creating chlorine by-products, it is considered one of the best available technologies (BAT) for helping manufacturers achieve compliance with stricter environmental regulations, while producing a superior pulp quality at significantly lower pulp production costs.
Because ozone is generated on site, and is used immediately, it eliminates transport and storage of hazardous chemicals, making it safer for workers and the public, and reducing liability. It breaks down to form oxygen, so vent gases can also be reused in any plant application requiring oxygen.
As a bleaching agent, ozone can be used in mechanical or chemical pulping processes, or hybrid processes such as TMP/CTMP/PGW. It can be used in both hardwood and softwood processing, and is an eco-efficient method for bleaching of non-wood pulps. Ozone is used to achieve very high brightness, while improving pulp cleanliness and strength properties. For manufacturers modifying processes to generate dissolving pulps, ozone is used to control viscosity and reduce operating costs, making it a keystone chemical in the dissolving process. Ozone reduces extractives (pitch) and particles (dirts) in the final bleached dissolving pulp, enhancing strength of the fiber. Reduced chemical costs mean that adding an ozone stage to an elemental chlorine free (ECF) may reduce bleaching costs by 20 to 35%. Even more savings are possible with the total chlorine free (TCF) bleaching process.
Uses for ozone in a pulp and paper mill may start with pulping and bleaching, but they don’t stop there. Ozone’s benefits for wastewater treatment begin in the bleaching process, as ozone does not create the adsorbable organic halides (AOX) formed by chlorine and chlorine dioxide, so the influent to the wastewater treatment system is of higher quality and lower toxicity. Ozone can breakdown difficult to treat COD into components with increased biodegradability, improving the removal rates in biological processes. Ozone coupled with biofiltration is particularly effective in treating pulp and paper processing wastewater and helping plants stay in compliance with treatment requirements. This combination is the BAT to remove difficult to treat COD remaining in the final effluent, when compared to conventional tertiary treatment techniques based on coagulation and flocculation. Even the oxygen generated when ozone breaks down, can be used in the biological treatment units to improve overall efficiency. Used as a final polishing step, ozone breaks down color and odor components and effectively disinfects the final discharge. Ozone has been used to reduce sludge volume and improve the sludge volume index, reducing disposal costs. It can disinfect cooling water, replacing biocides. Ozone can even reduce the overall fresh water usage by a mill by allowing treated water to be recycled to the process.
